Vilnius University founded in 1579 has played a significant part in the cultural life not only of Lithuania, but the neighbouring countries as well. Currently Vilnius University has 12 faculties, 8 institutes, 10 study and research centers, the oldest Library in Lithuania (contains about 6 mln. volumes), 3 university hospitals, an Astronomical Observatory, a Botanical Garden, a Centre of Information Technology Development,¬ and St. John's Church. Vilnius University is a comprehensive university. One can find study programs in medicine, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, geology, mathematics, informatics, psychology, economics, management, law as well as in other social sciences and humanities. All studies are of 3 cycles: Bachelor (undergraduate), Master (graduate), Doctoral. Scholarships for best international students are being provided. University students can participate in Erasmus programme. We have partners from more than 250 European Universities. Vilnius University offers several Joint Degree programmes that are being created together with partner universities.
Internationalisation is one of the strategic goals of the university. Among its numerous memberships the university boasts its membership at the European University Association (EUA), International Association of Universities (IUA), Utrecht, UNICA networks and 13 Erasmus thematic networks as well as over 100 hundred bilateral agreement of all over the world, including China, Japan, Singapore. Many academic units and their representatives are active members of specialized international academic associations and organizations.
