About City
In historical documents Biała Podlaska has been mentioned for the first time in 1481. Its first owners were the Illnicz family. It is believed that the founder of the city was Piotr Janowicz Biały - the Voivode of Trakai and the hetman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. During that time Biała (which means white in English) was a part of Brzeg voivodeship, which was a part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the second half of the XVI century the city became the ownership of the Radziwiłł family. On the basis of the entry in land registers it is thought that it has happened in 1569. The next two and a half century was a period of rapid city development and in that time it was called Biała Książęca (Prince`s Biała) or Biała Radziwiłłowska (Radziwiłł`s Biała). During the reign of Radziwiłł family a fortified castle was erected and the Krzysztof Ciborowicz Wilski foundation established Biała Academy, which in 1633 became a branch of the Cracow Academy (at present J.I. Kraszewskiego Secondary School) as well as many churches and a hospital has been built.
In 1655-60 the city was severely damaged by the Swedes and the army of Rakoczy as well as Chowański`s Cossacks. However, thanks to Michał Radziwiłł and his wife Katarzyna Sobieska it has been quickly rebuilt. In the XVII century Aleksander Ludwik Radziwiłł gave Biała the city rights. Its crest depicts St. Michael standing on a dragon with a sword and scales in his hands. Biała was damaged again in the ending of the XIX century during the Podlasie Uniates persecutions.
The rapid city development occurred during the interwar period when Raabe`s factory, city`s power plant and Podlasie Aircraft Works. The II World War stopped the city development but after it has ended the area on which Biała is situated has risen and the furniture and textile industry has been expanded.
In 1975 Biała Podlaska became a capital of the province which has greatly contributed to the growth of the number of citizens which doubled within the next 20 years. After the administrative reform in 1999 the city became powiat (equivalent to county) and it has many rights and titles which make it a main administrative centre in the region.
