Częstochowa – is a famous city all over the world thanks to the Monastery of Paulites on Jasna Góra and the presence of the Black Madonna Icon. Milions of pilgrims visit this unique place, offering thanksgiving and requests, in cheerful and sad moments of their lives. Częstochowa became one of the most significant Pilgrim aims all over the world. Sanctuary is visited by over 5 milions of people from 80 countries in the world. The greatest phenomenom are the foot pilgrimages - over 200 000 pilgrims come here every year. The longests tracks are around 600 kilometres and it takes up to 20 days of walking to reach Częstochowa.
First information about Częstochowa appeared in 1220, it was city with German law established by Kazimierz Wielki- very important trade centre on the way to Silesia and Saxony. The other factor while its history, was the privilege of extracting ore and melting it into an iron. Moreover, location close to the Warta river as well as existence of Monastery were conducive to the city development, which got the city privileges in 1717. The most intensive town development happened in the time of industry revolution- there were water resources and the railway Warsaw - Vienna, therefore many steel and textile factories were built, the chemical and accesory industry has been developing. Based on tradition, crafts workers were making products from noble metals, glass and ceramics. In the end of XIX century, Częstochowa used to be fastly growing and developing industry centre and 4th the biggest city in Kingdom. The Agriculture and Industry Exhibition was organized in 1909 – it was national manifestation of Polish culture and technical- productive potential. From 1933, city became Grodzkie’s District. At the beginning of XX century, Częstochowa consolidated its position on the market as well as cultural heritage: musums, libraries, theatres and education institutions were established, local newspapers arised. Diocese has been opened in 1925, which has been rised into Metropolis by the Pope Jean Paul II.
Present - day Częstochowa is a big social and economic centre and the academic centre: there are 9 Higher Education Institutions with over 40 000 students. It is also cultural centre, deriving from the tradition and history, with rich history, opened to the world. Częstochowa is also a lustrous town thanks to the award - Prix de l’Europe gained from Europen Council. It is the only city in Poland awarded in this way.
Time spent in our town will be remembered forever. City has got unique climate and atmosphere of charming streets, monastery, museums and galleries.
