About City
The Town Hall, located in the centre of the city, raised in 1763-1766, is the best start for beginning the journey around the city Siedlce. It was probably Joseph Zygmunt Deybel’s project. Current Town Hall has been built in the same place where two wooden Town Halls were located and then destroyed by fire. Cross shaped, is typical example of Trade Hall. Enormous parts of it were assigned for shops and the administration rooms were in Tower part, situated in the centre.
The Town Hall is not stylishly homogeneous – the lower parts of it have got the late baroque features, the Tower was indicated by rococo, its upper floor characterize the classicistic forms. There is unique Atlas sculpture, he lifts the Earth Globe- according to the princess Alexandra’s legend, his name was Jacek. Currently, the Town Hall is the residence of Regional Museum.
On the other side of Florianska’s Street, in front of the Town Hall, there is baroque- classicistic Saint Stanislaw Church, funded by Kazimierz Czartoryski- the prince and castellan and his wife- Izabella of Morsztyn origin. It was built in 1740-49, was the first church made of brick. The Basilica’s interior is three-nave, two-storey façade, in the lower part there is Tuscany portico, which the balcony is based on. It is worth to see four paintings of four evangelists from the Ossolinscy’s collection, which are located in presbytery. Moreover, Szymon Czechowicz paintings are located in side altars.
Other attraction of this city is the classicistic residence of Lords and Magnats, at Kosciuszki’s Street. This palace was raised by Prince Kazimierz Czartoryski before 1730. Thorough re-built was done by his granddaughter- Princess Alexandra Oginska in 1776-1782 according to the project of acritect Stanislaw Zawadzki. This great palace got new classicistic lump and new interior design.In XVII century, Polish King Stanislaw August Poniatowski visited the palace. Furthermore, the Tuscany column with baroque Cross (Sokolowska Street) has been put up because of this special event. Nowadays, it is still possible to see it. The others representants of the greatests royal ancestries also spent some time here: Braniccy, Potoccy, national heroes: Tadeusz Kosciuszko and enlightenment’s poets: Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz, Franciszek Karpinski and Franciszek Kniaznin.
Other national monument, worth to visit, is the Cathedral raised In 1905-1912 according to Zygmunt Zdanski’s project in neo-gothic style. Monumental church, with characteristic towers, visible from far away, has been built in accordance with Middle Ages proportions. Destroyed and re-built after II World War, they present the Church history in Poland.
