Wrocław (in Latin: Wratislavia or Vratislavia, in Czech: Vratislav, in German: Breslau , in Hungarian. Boroszló ) ? historic capital city of Silesia, one of the biggest (fourth, according to the number of citizens) and oldest cities in Poland, situated at the Oder river, in the Silesian Lowlands.
There are 5 major rivers flowing through the city: Oder and its four tributaries: Bystrzyca, Oława, Ślęza and Widawa. Before the Second World War there were 303 bridges in the city, now there are about 220 of them. Wrocław, the capital city of the Lower Silesia is one of the oldest and the most beautiful cities in Poland.
Of the times of the early Middle Ages reminds Ostrów Tumski, where one of the most beautiful sacred architecture complex is situated.
Another monument from this period is the Wrocław City Hall, considered one of the greatest Gothic constructions in the Middle Europe.
In Wrocław you can see one of the biggest baroque interiors, which survived to this day in Poland, that is Leopoldian Hall, constituting a part of the 18th century building of the University.
The old and the new architecture is surrounded by greenery.
Wrocław is the greenest city in Poland ? there are 25 square meters of greenery per citizen, excluding local greenery.
In the city centre there is a Szczytnicki Park, founded in the 18th century, where over 370 types of trees and bushes grow, as well as the original Japanese Garden, designed and upkept in accordance with the rules of Japanese gardening.
The Botanic Garden is just as good a place for walking, with its beautiful floral exposition, orangery, rock garden and the biggest cacti garden in Poland. The zoological garden, founded in 1865 with its 5.5 thousand animals representing 650 species is just as great.
